The two most popular and most important topics in American society are abortion and gay marriage.Both have been at the center of controversy for years and both have generated hundreds of thousands of articles and thousands of blog posts. Of course each issue has its own fans and it's hard to summarize all of them in just one essay but I think the topic that seems to generate the most controversy is gay marriage. In fact, if you take a look at the statistics over the last several decades, there is no debate that same sex couples are getting married at the highest rate in history.There are many different reasons for this. First, many states that only allowed civil unions between same sex couples legalized gay marriage too. Second, the social climate that has been created around these issues by our media and our political leaders has caused many people to feel comfortable enough to come out and be in a same sex relationship.Another interesting point of contention is abortion. Many would argue that abortion is the most controversial issue of all. In the United States, abortions have become an almost weekly occurrence and some of the biggest controversy happens when a politician attempts to regulate a woman's reproductive rights.Yet another issue is immigration. In fact, some immigrants believe that their children will be best served if they become citizens of the United States. When trying to define the best arguments for each issue, I think you can see that abortion, gay marriage, and immigration are all linked together and that w hen those issues are linked together they are all closely related to each other.With all of the talk and political leadership surrounding these issues, it's no wonder that these two topics have been debated so much. In fact, if you take a look at these two issues, it would seem that the only two people who were not 'in' on these topics were the women that will be going through these pregnancies. Some of the most controversial issues that we have had in our country were related to these issues and it seems like that is still true today.So which issue is the most controversial? Well, that is definitely an open question. I think the fact that these two issues have been at the center of controversy for so long, there has to be some sort of consensus that both sides of these two issues are not the right side or the wrong side. Either these two issues are in fact up for debate or they are in fact settled for all time.The issue is simple; no one has a clear cut answer on either issue. And when two sides are arguing so fiercely and passionately about an issue, the importance of leaving the debate for the future generations is paramount. If we don't leave the issue for future generations, we run the risk of these issues being swept under the rug, never addressed, and forgotten about, and if that were to happen, then those who create this culture will also be forgotten about.
